A-levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) and Foundation

Secondary school leavers who wish to enter a British university must first sit and pass exams in one of the following pre-university courses:

  • A-levels
  • IB (International Baccalaureate)
  • University Foundation Year

A-levels are for students aged 16-17. Students study 3-4 subjects plus English language for two years. This is the most widespread post-16 course amongst British students and is recognised by all British universities, as well as European and American universities.

The IB is for students aged 16-17. The course also lasts for two years during which time students study 6 subjects, including “English as a foreign language” for foreign students. This course is suitable for strong students, preparing for entry to the most prestigious English and American universities.

The Foundation course is for students aged 18 who have completed secondary school but do not have either A-levels or IB (mostly because of different education system in their own country) . The course lasts for one year, during which time students study English language and several other subjects. By no means do all universities recognise these programmes and so the college must be chosen very carefully! The majority of Foundation course students are foreigners. The only exception to this are those British students who have chosen a creative specialism (design, art, directing etc.). Such students have completed A-levels or an IB and need to undertake a Foundation year, during which time they prepare a portfolio of creative work, according to which they are accepted to university.

The AP (Advanced Placement Program) is for excellent students aged over 18 who wish to enter an English or American university. The course lasts for 1 year.
